Sources and licences
Finland Map does not collect destination data itself. It brings together public and open datasets onto a single map. This page sets out openly where each piece of information comes from, under which licence it is used, and how the original authors are credited.
Sources of the destination data
The service currently holds 49,570 destinations. Every destination carries a record of the dataset it came from. The figures below are counted directly from the database.

LIPAS – Suomen liikuntapaikat — 27,360 destinations
The Finnish national database of sports and outdoor recreation facilities. The single largest source in this service: gyms, sports fields, ice rinks, disc golf courses, beaches, lean-to shelters, trails and ski tracks. Retrieved from the open LIPAS REST interface (lipas.fi/rest/sports-places), which supplies the facility attributes alongside the location: type, owner, operator, construction year, dimensions and surface material.

OpenStreetMap — 15,278 destinations
An open, community-maintained map of the world. Used as the source for churches, flea markets, breweries, marinas, campfire sites and many other categories. Retrieved via the Overpass API. The OpenStreetMap tile layer is also used as the base map of this service.

Maanmittauslaitos – Nimistö — 5,374 destinations
The open geographic names dataset of the National Land Survey of Finland. Used mainly for natural features — rapids, waterfalls, hills and landforms — for location and naming data. Retrieved from the open OGC API Features interface.

Wikipedia — 670 destinations
The Finnish-language Wikipedia. Used to identify destinations via category queries, and as the source of the description text for some entries. Descriptions originating from Wikipedia are licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 and are accompanied by a link to the original article.

Museovirasto — 549 destinations
The cultural environment spatial datasets of the Finnish Heritage Agency: the archaeological sites register, the built heritage register and underwater sites. Used as the source for fortifications, ruins, dive sites and archaeological locations. Retrieved from the Agency's open OGC/WFS interface.

Wikidata — 132 destinations
The open knowledge base maintained by the Wikimedia Foundation. Used to enrich coordinates, official names, website addresses and image references. Wikidata content is released under CC0, i.e. free for any use.

Own editorial work — 207 destinations
Manually collected and verified flagship destinations: the best-known castles, museums, national parks and spas. These entries have been compiled and checked by hand against the destinations' own websites.

In addition to the destination database, the service uses the following datasets and interfaces.
Ticketmaster Discovery API
The content of the event calendar. Event data, performers, venues and ticketing links are fetched automatically once a day from the Ticketmaster API in accordance with its terms of use.
Wikimedia Commons
Some of the destination photographs. The images are freely licensed (CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC0 or public domain). Author and licence details for each image are available on its own page on Wikimedia Commons.
Statistics Finland – municipal boundaries
Municipal boundaries and names, used to assign each destination to the correct municipality. The dataset is licensed under CC BY 4.0 (© Statistics Finland).
Nominatim (OpenStreetMap)
Reverse geocoding, i.e. turning coordinates into a locality when the source dataset has no municipality field. ODbL 1.0.
Map tile layers
The base map is served from the OpenStreetMap tile layer (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL 1.0). The satellite view uses the Esri World Imagery layer in accordance with its own terms of use.
Lomarengas (Adtraction)
The cottage listings and photos shown on destination pages come from Lomarengas' partner feed via the Adtraction affiliate network. The data is the property of Lomarengas and is displayed under the terms of that partnership.
Description texts
The majority of the description texts on destination pages are produced by Finland Map. They are generated automatically from the structured data of each destination — its type, location, municipality and the attribute data of the source dataset. The copyright in these texts belongs to Finland Map.
For roughly 3,300 destinations the description originates from Wikipedia. These texts are licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0: they may be used freely provided the original source is credited and derivative works are published under the same terms. Every such destination page carries a link to the original Wikipedia article.
Reusing the data
Most of the destination data in this service comes from open datasets that anyone may use under the terms of the original licences. Note, however, that the OpenStreetMap ODbL licence and the Wikipedia CC BY-SA licence both carry a share-alike condition: derived datasets must be published under the same terms. Finland Map's own work — the description texts, the category structure, the translations, the source code and the design — is not open data.
Incorrect or missing information
Data compiled from open datasets is never perfect. If you spot an error, an out-of-date detail or a missing destination, please get in touch and we will correct it. If the error lies in the original source dataset, it is worth reporting it to that dataset's maintainer as well, so the fix benefits everyone who uses the data.
