About

Huuhkajanpäänpaistaman silta is a small trail bridge inside the Sompio Strict Nature Reserve in the northern part of Sodankylä, about 95 kilometres from the municipal centre and roughly ten kilometres north-east of Tankavaara. The bridge crosses the Ylisenoja stream on a hiking path and is recorded in the Finnish Heritage Agency's cultural environment data.

The name comes from the neighbouring Huuhkajanpäänpaistama: in Lapland place names a paistama is an area burned by a forest fire, and huuhkaja is the eagle owl, Finland's largest owl. Sompio Strict Nature Reserve was established in 1956 beside Urho Kekkonen National Park to protect forest, fell and mire habitats for research. In the reserve, moving off the marked hiking trails is prohibited all year round, so the bridge is reached along the path, not across open terrain.

The nearest services are at Tankavaara on Highway 4. This is wilderness: bring a map and check trail conditions on Metsähallitus's luontoon.fi before setting out.
