Description
Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang (Symphony-Cantata No. 2, Op. 52, “Hymn of Praise”), composed for orchestra, choir, and soloists, follows a journey from darkness to light, offering hope and uplift in the midst of November’s gloom.
Mendelssohn wrote the work to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press. The theme of light also symbolizes the spread of knowledge through reading and printing, particularly through the publication of the Bible.
Filled with optimism and vitality, Lobgesang combines majestic hymns of praise with more intimate, heavenly melodies.
The result is a moving and accessible work that draws listeners into its emotional narrative. It is an ideal introduction for those less familiar with classical music, while experienced concertgoers will appreciate the opportunity to hear this rarely performed masterpiece.
The work will be presented in Joachim Linckelmann’s chamber orchestra arrangement. The performance is connected to Helsinki Cathedral’s “Let There Be Light” theme month on mental health in October 2026.
