This page covers winter swimming spots (avanto): holes maintained by associations, municipal winter swimming sites and the ice holes at saunas and spas. Three things are worth checking when you choose: whether there is a sauna, whether an ice prevention system keeps the hole open, and whether a beach is nearby.
Many spots have a sauna, so a place to warm up is often close. Not all do, and the municipal pages show which. An ice prevention system is recorded only at some of the spots. Elsewhere the hole can freeze over, and the thickness of the ice varies. A spot run by a club may not be open to everyone, so check the terms of use and how to get there in the dark.
The municipal pages show which holes are within 200 metres of a beach, for example Furuvik, Aurinkolahti and Iso Kallahti in Helsinki.
The municipal pages list the spots in one area, for example Helsinki, Espoo and Tampere.
